Abstract
A slide handling system is disclosed. The system has a carrier comprising a retention hole, a compartment configured to accept the carrier, and a spacer disposed so as to engage the retention hole when the carrier is fully seated in the compartment.

A system, comprising:
- a carrier comprising a retention hole;
- a compartment configured to accept the carrier;
- and
- a spacer disposed so as to engage the retention hole when the carrier is fully seated in the compartment.

A cartridge for handling a carrier having a retention hole, said cartridge comprising:
- a compartment configured to accept the carrier;
- and
- a spacer disposed so as to engage the retention hole when the carrier is fully seated in the compartment.
A method of positioning a slide for examination, comprising:
- placing a cartridge on a platform, the cartridge containing a carrier holding the slide;
- rotating a drive rod so as to move the platform to a position where the carrier is proximate to a carrier mount;
- and
- rotating an actuator in a first direction so as to remove the carrier from the cartridge and place the carrier in an accepted position of the carrier mount.
