Abstract
The disclosure relates to a 5th generation (5G) communication system or a 6th generation (6G) communication system for supporting higher data rates beyond a 4th generation (4G) communication system such as long term evolution (LTE). A method and an apparatus for selecting random access group and identifying radio network temporary identifier (RNTI) for random access procedure in next generation wireless communication system are provided.

A method performed by a terminal in a wireless communication system, the method comprising:
- receiving, from a base station, physical random access channel (PRACH) configuration information including information on a subcarrier spacing for a random access preamble;
- transmitting, to the base station, the random access preamble for a random access procedure in a PRACH occasion by using the subcarrier spacing;
- identifying a radio network temporary identifier (RNTI) for the random access procedure based on the subcarrier spacing used for the random access preamble;
- and
- monitoring a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) addressed to the RNTI in a random access response window,
- wherein the RNTI for the random access procedure is identified by using a parameter s_id which is an index of a first orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbol of the PRACH occasion, a parameter t_id which is an index of a first slot of the PRACH occasion in a system frame, a parameter f_id which is an index of the PRACH occasion in a frequency domain, and a parameter ul_carrier_id which is an uplink carrier used for the random access preamble, and
- wherein, in case that the subcarrier spacing used for transmitting the random access preamble is larger than 120 kHz, the parameter t_id is identified based on an assumption that the subcarrier spacing for the random access preamble is 120 kHz and the system frame includes 80 slots.
