A method of making a slag, the method comprising adding a source of silica and a source of boron ions to the slag prior to cooling of the slag, wherein the total amount of the source of silica and the source of boron ions comprises at least about 35 wt % silica.

- from about 5 wt % to about 25 wt % of a source of boron ions;
- and
- from about 75 wt % to about 95 wt % of a source of silica,
- wherein the composition comprises at least about 35 wt % of silica.
