Screen content encoding mode evaluation optimizations

A method, implemented by a computing device, for determining coding modes for video content, the method comprising, for each block of multiple blocks of a frame of the video content:

• determining an order of multiple potential coding modes for the block, the multiple potential coding modes comprising intra-block copy mode, palette mode, and directional spatial prediction mode;
• and
• determining a coding mode for the block, the block having a block classification selected from multiple categories, the multiple categories comprising simple vertical, simple horizontal, simple, and non-simple, wherein:
• the intra-block copy mode is not used when the block classification of the block is simple vertical, simple horizontal, or simple;
• and
• the palette mode is not used when the block classification of the block is simple vertical, simple horizontal, or simple.

One or more non-transitory computer-readable media having stored thereon computer-executable instructions for causing one or more processors, when programmed thereby, to perform operations to determine coding modes for video content, the operations comprising, for each block of multiple blocks of a frame of the video content:

• determining an order of multiple potential coding modes for the block, the multiple potential coding modes comprising intra-block copy mode, palette mode, and directional spatial prediction mode;
• and
• determining a coding mode for the block, the block having a block classification selected from multiple categories, the multiple categories comprising simple vertical, simple horizontal, simple, and non-simple, wherein:
• the intra-block copy mode is not used when the block classification of the block is simple vertical, simple horizontal, or simple;
• and
• the palette mode is not used when the block classification of the block is simple vertical, simple horizontal, or simple.

A computer system comprising one or more processors and memory, the computer system implementing a video encoder configured to perform operations to determine coding modes for video content, the operations comprising, for each block of multiple blocks of a frame of the video content:

• determining an order of multiple potential coding modes for the block, the multiple potential coding modes comprising intra-block copy mode, palette mode, and directional spatial prediction mode;
• and
• determining a coding mode for the block, the block having a block classification selected from multiple categories, the multiple categories comprising simple vertical, simple horizontal, simple, and non-simple, wherein:
• the intra-block copy mode is not used when the block classification of the block is simple vertical, simple horizontal, or simple;
• and
• the palette mode is not used when the block classification of the block is simple vertical, simple horizontal, or simple.
