Abstract
Antimicrobial peptides and methods of use are provided.
Claims22
1:
- A peptide comprising the amino acid sequence RRRWWW (SEQ ID NO:
- 60).
2:
- The peptide of claim 1, wherein said peptide comprises the amino acid sequence RRRWWWWX (SEQ ID NO:
- 62), wherein X is any amino acid.
3:
- The peptide of claim 2, wherein X is leucine, valine, or alanine.
4:
- The peptide of claim 1, wherein said peptide comprises an amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs:
- 56-59.
5:
- A peptide comprising the sequence GLLSLLSLLGKLL (SEQ ID NO:
- 1), wherein at least one amino acid has been substituted, inserted, and/or deleted, or said peptide comprises the amino acids of GLLSLLSLLGKLL (SEQ ID NO:
- 1) in a shuffled sequence.
6:
- The peptide of claim 5, wherein the peptide comprises the sequence GLLSLLSLLGKLL (SEQ ID NO:
- 1), wherein at least one amino acid has been substituted and/or deleted.
7:
- The peptide of claim 6, wherein at least one of the leucine amino acids at positions 5, 6, 8, 9, 12, or 13 has been substituted and/or deleted.
8:
- The peptide of claim 5, wherein said peptide comprises an amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs:
- 2-15 and 18 or wherein said peptide comprises an amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs:
- 22-28.
9:
- A peptide comprising the sequence GLSLLLSLGLKLL (SEQ ID NO:
- 23), wherein at least one amino acid has been substituted, inserted, and/or deleted, and wherein the sequence LLL is retained.
10:
- The peptide of claim 9, wherein said peptide comprises an amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs:
- 29-34.
11:
- A peptide comprising an amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs:
- 42-48.
12:
- The peptide of claim 1, wherein said peptide comprises at least one D-amino acid.
13:
- The peptide of claim 12, wherein all of the amino acids are D-amino acids.
14:
- The peptide of claim 1, wherein said peptide comprises at least one modification selected from the group consisting of amidation and acetylation.
15:
- The peptide of claim 1, wherein said peptide is less than 12 amino acids in length.
16:
- A composition comprising at least one peptide of claim 1 and at least one pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
17:
- The composition of claim 16, further comprising at least one antibiotic.
18:
- A method for inhibiting a microbial infection in a subject in need thereof, said method comprising administering to said subject at least one peptide of claim 1.
19:
- The method of claim 18, further comprising the administration of at least one additional antibiotic.
20:
- The method of claim 18, wherein said microbial infection is a staphylococcal infection.
21:
- The method of claim 18, wherein said microbial infection is a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection.
22:
- A medical device or implant comprising at least one peptide of claim 1 covalently attached to the surface of the medical device or implant.
