Abstract
Surgical end effectors with first and second jaws that are opened and closed with an axially movable firing member. The firing member is configured to apply a first closure motion to the second jaw to move the second jaw from an open position to a closed position as the firing member is moved in a distal direction from a home position to an ending position. The firing member is further configured to move the second jaw towards the first jaw when the firing member is moved in a proximal direction from the home position.
Claims20
A surgical end effector, comprising:
- a first jaw;
- a second jaw, wherein said second jaw is configured to move relative to said first jaw between an open position and a closed position;
- and
- a firing member supported for axial travel within said surgical end effector between a home position corresponding to said open position of said second jaw and an ending position, wherein said firing member is configured to apply a first closure motion to said second jaw to move said second jaw from said open position to said closed position as said firing member is moved in a distal direction from said home position to said ending position, and wherein said firing member is further configured to apply a second closure motion to said second jaw to move said second jaw towards said first jaw when said firing member is moved in a proximal direction from said home position.
A surgical instrument, comprising:
- an elongate shaft operably supporting a firing drive system therein;
- and
- a surgical end effector operably coupled to said elongate shaft, wherein said surgical end effector comprises:
- a first jaw;
- a second jaw, wherein said second jaw is configured to move relative to said first jaw between an open position and a closed position;
- and
- a firing member operably interfacing with said firing drive system, wherein said firing drive system is configured to move said firing member between a home position corresponding to said open position of said second jaw and an ending position, wherein when said firing member is moved distally from said home position, said firing member is configured to apply a first closure motion to said second jaw to move said second jaw from said open position to said closed position, and wherein said firing drive system is configured to move said firing member proximally from said home position such that, when said firing member moves proximally from said home position, said firing member applies a second closure motion to said second jaw to move said second jaw towards said first jaw.
A surgical instrument, comprising:
- an elongate shaft operably supporting a firing drive system therein;
- and
- a surgical end effector operably coupled to said elongate shaft, wherein said surgical end effector comprises:
- a first jaw;
- a second jaw, wherein said second jaw is configured to move relative to said first jaw between an open position and a closed position;
- and
- a firing member operably interfacing with said firing drive system, wherein said firing drive system is configured to move said firing member between a home position corresponding to said open position of said second jaw and an ending position, wherein when said firing member is moved distally from said home position, said firing member is configured to apply a first closure motion to said second jaw to move said second jaw from said open position to said closed position, and wherein when said firing member is moved proximally from said home position, said firing member applies a second closure motion to said second jaw and wherein said surgical instrument further comprises means for applying a rotary motion to said firing member to move said firing member distally from said home position and proximally from said home position, wherein said means for applying is further configured to apply additional rotary motions to a drive arrangement interfacing with said firing member to apply axial drive motions to said firing member.
