Abstract
Various systems and methods for performing bit indexed explicit replication (BIER) using multiprotocol label switching (MPLS). For example, one method involves receiving a packet that includes a MPLS label. The packet also includes a multicast forwarding entry. The method also involves determining, based on the value of the MPLS label, whether to use the multicast forwarding entry to forward the packet. The method further includes forwarding the packet.
Claims20
A method comprising:
- a node receiving a first message that originated at a first node in a network of nodes, wherein the first message comprises first label range value and a first identification (ID) that uniquely identifies the first node in the network;
- using the first ID, the node determining a first bit-indexed explicit replication (BIER) node on a path to the first node;
- the node creating a first entry in a bit routing table (BRT);
- the node adding the first ID, an ID of the first BIER node, and the first label value range to the first entry;
- the node creating a bit forwarding table (BFT) using the BRT;
- the node using the BFT to forward packets it receives.
A system comprising:
- a node configured to
- receive a first message that originated at a first node in a network of nodes, wherein the first message comprises first label range value and a first identification (ID) that uniquely identifies the first node in the network;
- using the first ID, determine a first bit-indexed explicit replication (BIER) node on a path to the first node;
- create a first entry in a bit routing table (BRT);
- add the first ID, an ID of the first BIER node, and the first label value range to the first entry;
- create a bit forwarding table (BFT) using the BRT;
- use the BFT to forward packets it receives.
A non-transitory computer readable storage medium comprising executable instructions, wherein a method is implemented by a node in response to executing the instructions, the method comprising:
- receiving a first message that originated at a first node in a network of nodes, wherein the first message comprises first label range value and a first identification (ID) that uniquely identifies the first node in the network;
- using the first ID, determining a first bit-indexed explicit replication (BIER) node on a path to the first node;
- creating a first entry in a bit routing table (BRT);
- adding the first ID, an ID of the first BIER node, and the first label value range to the first entry;
- creating a bit forwarding table (BFT) using the BRT;
- sing the BFT to forward packets it receives.
