Data Storage Space Recovery

A system comprising:

• at least one processor;
• and
• a memory including instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to perform operations including:
• storing data objects in a plurality of partitions of storage;
• identifying which of the plurality of partitions to recover storage space from by prioritizing the plurality of partitions based on stale data objects in the partitions;
• and
• recovering the storage space of a partition based on a respective priority and by using compaction requests to compact the data objects of the partition, the compaction requests being interspersed with I/O operations to the storage.

Computer-readable storage media storing instructions that are executable by at least one processor to perform operations comprising:

• storing data objects in a plurality of partitions of storage;
• identifying which of the plurality of partitions to recover storage space from by prioritizing the plurality of partitions based on stale data objects in the partitions;
• and
• recovering the storage space of a partition based on a respective priority and by using compaction requests to compact the data objects of the partition, the compaction requests being interspersed with I/O operations to the storage.
