Gateway devices can use dual cellular interfaces, each assignable to at least one of a plurality of network services, to provide reliable communications for client machines. A gateway device can use one of the dual cellular interfaces assigned to a first network service as a primary interface and the other assigned to a second network service as a hot backup interface. The backup interface remains connected to a cellular network while communications are routed on the primary interface. Accordingly, the gateway device can rapidly switch communications between from the primary interface to the backup interface. Applications, for example, for ATM payment processing, vending machine telemetry, point of sale payment processing, kiosk internet connectivity, remote monitoring and control, mobile or electronic health, and remote information displays, may run on the gateway devices, on servers, on user devices, or a combination of these devices.
A gateway apparatus capable of communicating with two cellular networks, comprising:
The gateway apparatus of embodiment 1, wherein the cellular module is a modem.
The gateway apparatus of embodiment 1, wherein the cellular module comprises only a single modem.
The gateway apparatus of embodiment 1, wherein first cellular interface comprises a first subscriber identification module (SIM) card and the second cellular interface comprises a second SIM card.
The gateway apparatus of embodiment 1, wherein the plurality of network services comprises data services, voice services, and short messaging services (SMS).
The gateway apparatus of embodiment 1, wherein the one or more processors are configured to monitor the second network using the second network service via the second cellular interface.
The gateway apparatus of embodiment 7, wherein the one or more processors are configured to route other communications using the second network service via the second cellular interface.
The gateway apparatus of embodiment 1, wherein the determination to switch communication from the first network comprises determining that the first network is one or more of unreliable, unavailable, inactive, and idle.
The gateway apparatus of embodiment 1, wherein the one or more processors is configured to assign the first cellular interface to the first network services and assign the second cellular interface to the second network service.
The gateway apparatus of embodiment 1, wherein the one or more processors is configured to change the second cellular interface to a third network services of the plurality of network services.
The gateway apparatus of embodiment 1, wherein, after determining to switch communication from the first network, the one or more processors is configured to change the second network interface to a third network services of the plurality of network services and use the third network service to communicate over the second network.
The gateway apparatus of embodiment 11, wherein, after determining to switch communication from the first network, the one or more processors is configured to change the network service assigned to the first network interface and maintain a connection to the first network using the second network service.
The gateway apparatus of embodiment 12, wherein the third network service is the same service as the first network service.
A dual channel gateway device, comprising:
The dual channel gateway apparatus of embodiment 14, wherein the cellular module is a modem.
The dual channel gateway apparatus of embodiment 14, wherein the cellular module comprises only a single modem.
The dual channel gateway apparatus of embodiment 14, wherein first network interface comprises a first subscriber identification module (SIM) card configured to identify and authenticate the gateway device to the first network and the second cellular interface comprises a second SIM card configured to identify and authenticate the gateway device to the second network.
The dual channel gateway apparatus of embodiment 14, wherein the plurality of network services comprises data services, voice services, and short messaging services (SMS).
The dual channel gateway apparatus of embodiment 14, wherein, after determining to switch communication from the first network, the one or more processors is configured to change the second network interface to a third network services of the plurality of network services and use the third network service to communicate over the second network.
The dual channel gateway apparatus of embodiment 19, wherein, after determining to switch communication from the first network, the one or more processors is configured to change the network service assigned to the first network interface and maintain a connection to the first network using the second network service.
