Systems and methods for application-friendly protocol data unit (pdu) session management

A method comprising:

• receiving, by a session management function (SMF) from a policy control function (PCF), a traffic steering policy including N6 point-to-point tunnelling requirements;
• calculating, by the SMF, N6 point-to-point tunnel information based on the N6 point-to-point tunnelling requirements;
• and
• configuring, by the SMF, the N6 point-to-point tunnel information into a protocol data unit (PDU) session anchor.

An apparatus comprising a processor coupled with a memory, the processor being configured to execute steps of:

• receiving from a policy control function (PCF), a traffic steering policy including N6 point-to-point tunnelling requirements;
• calculating N6 point-to-point tunnel information based on the N6 point-to-point tunnelling requirements;
• and
• configuring the N6 point-to-point tunnel information into a protocol data unit (PDU) session anchor.
