Custom metadata tag inheritance based on a filesystem directory tree or object storage bucket

A system for managing metadata comprising:

• a metadata management platform (MMP) containing circuitry and logic, the MMP configured to connect to a data storage system (DSS) that stores data and metadata separate from the data and has metadata attributes set in at least one of the group consisting of a directory for a file system and a bucket for an object system, wherein the MMP comprises:
• a database to store enhanced metadata records having metadata attributes, and
• a cache look-up table having a plurality of entries, each entry having at least one of the group consisting of a directory and a bucket and corresponding metadata attributes for the directory or bucket,
• wherein the MMP is configured to receive metadata records from the DSS and store metadata attributes from the at least one of the group consisting of a directory or a bucket in the look-up table on the MMP,
• wherein the MMP is further configured to inspect the file path or object path in the metadata record for the file's directory or the object's bucket, perform a search in the look-up table for an entry with a matching directory or bucket, apply the metadata attributes to the metadata record from the entry in the look-up table with the matching directory or bucket to create an enhanced metadata record having metadata attributes, and save the enhanced metadata record in the database on the MMP.
