Abstract
This document provides methods and materials for treating osteoarthritis. For example, a mammal having, or at risk for developing, osteoarthritis can be treated by increasing the level of one or more Klotho polypeptides (e.g., one or more alpha-Klotho (α-Klotho) polypeptides) within cells (e.g., chondrocytes) within the mammal.

A method for treating a mammal having osteoarthritis, wherein said method comprises administering an α-Klotho polypeptide or nucleic acid encoding said α-Klotho polypeptide to a mammal identified as having osteoarthritis.
A method for improving cartilage integrity within a mammal having osteoarthritis, wherein said method comprises administering an α-Klotho polypeptide or nucleic acid encoding said α-Klotho polypeptide to a mammal identified as having osteoarthritis.
A method for reducing cartilage degeneration within a mammal having osteoarthritis, wherein said method comprises administering an α-Klotho polypeptide or nucleic acid encoding said α-Klotho polypeptide to a mammal identified as having osteoarthritis.
