Augmented-reality visualization of an ophthalmic surgical tool

A method, comprising:

• receiving an optical image of an organ of a patient;
• receiving an anatomical image of the organ;
• receiving, from a position tracking system (PTS), a position signal indicative of a position of a medical instrument treating the organ;
• registering the optical image and the anatomical image in a common coordinate system;
• estimating the position of the medical instrument in at least one of the optical image and the anatomical image;
• and
• visualizing the medical instrument overlaid on at least one of the optical image and the anatomical image.

A system, comprising:

• a medical instrument, which is configured to treat an organ of a patient;
• a position sensor of a position tracking system (PTS), which is coupled to the medical instrument, and is configured to produce a position signal indicative of a position of the medical instrument;
• a processor, which is configured to:
• receive (i) an optical image and an anatomical image of the organ, and (ii) the position signal;
• register the optical image and the anatomical image in a common coordinate system;
• and
• estimate the position of the medical instrument in at least one of the optical image and the anatomical image;
• and
• a display, which is configured to visualize the medical instrument overlaid on at least one of the optical image and the anatomical image.
