Abstract
The present invention provides nutritional compositions (for example, sensorially acceptable nutritional compositions) that comprise a fruit component, a fiber component, and a micronutrient component. Also provided are methods of making and using the nutritional compositions.
Claims12
A method for increasing high density lipoprotein (HDL) particles and decreasing low density lipoprotein (LDL) particles in a patient, the method comprising orally administering to the patient an amount of a nutritional composition effective to increase HDL and to decrease LDL, wherein each daily dose of the nutritional composition comprises between 30 and 500 grams, and wherein the nutritional composition comprises:
- a) a fruit component, wherein the fruit component is from 20 to 40% (w/w) of the composition;
- b) a viscous soluble fiber component, wherein the viscous soluble fiber component is from 6 to 8% (w/w) of the composition, and wherein the viscous soluble fiber component is a 1:1 ratio by weight of β-glucan and hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose;
- c) a vitamin component, wherein the vitamin component comprises:
- β carotene, wherein the β carotene is from 0.00025% to 0.0010% (w/w) of the composition,
- vitamin B6, wherein the vitamin B6 is from 0.001% to 0.005% (w/w) of the composition,
- vitamin B12, wherein the vitamin B12 is from 0.0000015% to 0.000005% (w/w) of the composition,
- vitamin C, wherein the vitamin C is from 0.35% to 4% (w/w) of the composition,
- vitamin D, wherein the vitamin D is from 0.000008% to 0.000034% (w/w) of the composition,
- vitamin E, wherein the vitamin is from 0.008% to 0.034% (w/w) of the composition,
- vitamin K, wherein the vitamin K is from 0.00005% to 0.0004% (w/w) of the composition, and
- folate, wherein the folate is from 0.0003% to 0.0015% (w/w) of the composition;
- d) a mineral component, wherein the mineral component comprises:
- calcium, wherein the calcium is from 0.5% to 2.0% (w/w) of the composition,
- magnesium, wherein the magnesium is from 0.2% to about 1% (w/w) of the composition,
- potassium, wherein the potassium is from 0.2% to about 1% (w/w) of the composition, and
- zinc, wherein the zinc is from 0.004% to 0.015% (w/w) of the composition;
- and,
- e) docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), wherein the DHA is from 0.1% to 1% (w/w) of the composition and wherein DHA is present in an amount between 300 and 500 mg.
A method for manufacturing a nutritional composition that increases high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) particles and decreases low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) particles in a patient, the method comprising the step of combining in a single composition of between 30 and 500 grams the following components:
- a) a fruit concentrate component, wherein the fruit concentrate component is from 20 to 40% (w/w) of the composition;
- b) a viscous soluble fiber component, wherein the viscous soluble fiber component is from 6 to 8% (w/w) of the composition and is a 1:1 ratio by weight of β-glucan and hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose;
- and,
- c) a vitamin component, wherein the vitamin component comprises:
- β carotene, wherein the β carotene is from 0.00025% to 0.0010% (w/w) of the composition,
- vitamin B6, wherein the vitamin B6 is from 0.001% to 0.005% (w/w) of the composition,
- vitamin B12, wherein the vitamin B12 is from 0.0000015% to 0.000005% (w/w) of the composition,
- vitamin C, wherein the vitamin C is from 0.35% to 4% (w/w) of the composition,
- vitamin D, wherein the vitamin D is from 0.000008% to 0.000034% (w/w) of the composition,
- vitamin E, wherein the vitamin is from 0.008% to 0.034% (w/w) of the composition,
- vitamin K, wherein the vitamin K is from 0.00005% to 0.0004% (w/w) of the composition, and
- folate, wherein the folate is from 0.0003% to 0.0015% (w/w) of the composition;
- d) a mineral component, wherein the mineral component comprises:
- calcium, wherein the calcium is from 0.5% to 2.0% (w/w) of the composition,
- magnesium, wherein the magnesium is from 0.2% to about 1% (w/w) of the composition,
- potassium, wherein the potassium is from 0.2% to about 1% (w/w) of the composition, and
- zinc, wherein the zinc is from 0.004% to 0.015% (w/w) of the composition;
- and,
