Abstract

Disclosed herein is a first wireless communication node comprising a first communication module that includes a first baseband unit configured to handle baseband processing for the first communication module, a first RF unit configured to define a frequency range of radio signals for the first communication module, and a first antenna unit configured to generate a first extremely-narrow beam that facilitates exchange of radio signals with at least one other wireless communication node. The first wireless communication node may also comprise a second communication module that includes a second baseband unit configured to handle baseband processing for the second communication module, a second RF unit configured to define a frequency range of radio signals for the second communication module, and a second antenna unit configured to generate a second extremely-narrow beam that facilitates exchange of radio signals with at least one other wireless communication node.

Dependent claims

A communication system comprising:

a first set of wireless communication nodes located at respective anchor sites within a given geographic region;
and
a second set of wireless communication nodes located at respective non-anchor sites within the given geographic region,
wherein the wireless communication nodes in the first and second sets form a wireless mesh access network having at least:
a first layer comprising a mesh of wireless, bi-directional point-to-point links for carrying aggregated mesh access traffic among the wireless communication nodes in the first set, wherein each respective wireless, bi-directional point-to-point link in the mesh of wireless, bi-directional point-to-point links is established between a respective pair of wireless communication nodes in the first set;
a second layer comprising a plurality of wireless, bi-directional point-to-multipoint links that extend the mesh of wireless, bi-directional point-to-point links by carrying individual mesh access traffic between the wireless communication nodes in the first set and the wireless communication nodes in the second set, wherein each of the plurality of wireless, bi-directional point-to-multipoint links is established between a respective one of the wireless communication nodes in the first set and one or more of the wireless communication nodes in the second set;
and
a first additional wireless, bi-directional point-to-point link for carrying aggregated mesh access traffic between the mesh of wireless, bi-directional point-to-point links and a first access point (AP) for a core network, wherein the first additional wireless, bi-directional point-to-point link is established between a first wireless communication node in the first set and the first AP.

A given wireless communication node configured to operate within a wireless mesh access network having at least (i) a first layer comprising a mesh of wireless, bi-directional point-to-point links for carrying aggregated mesh access traffic among a first set of wireless communication nodes located at respective anchor sites within a given geographic region and (ii) a second layer comprising a plurality of wireless, bi-directional point-to-multipoint links that extend the mesh of wireless, bi-directional point-to-point links by carrying individual mesh access traffic between the first set of wireless communication nodes and a second set of wireless communication nodes located at respective non-anchor sites within the given geographic region, the given wireless communication node comprising:

a first wireless communication module that is configured to (i) establish a first wireless, bi-directional point-to-point link with a first other wireless communication node in the first set of wireless communication nodes located at respective anchor sites and (ii) exchange aggregated mesh access traffic with the first other wireless communication node in the first set of wireless communication nodes;
a second wireless communication module that is configured to (i) establish a second wireless, bi-directional point-to-point link with a second other wireless communication node in the first set of wireless communication nodes located at respective anchor sites and (ii) exchange aggregated mesh access traffic with the second other wireless communication node in the first set of wireless communication nodes;
and
a third wireless communication module that is configured to (i) establish a wireless, bi-directional point-to-multipoint link with one or more other wireless communication nodes in the second set of wireless communication nodes located at respective non-anchor sites and (ii) exchange individual mesh access traffic with the two or more other wireless communication nodes in the second set of wireless communication nodes.
