System for communication with devices on a network to minimize power consumption

A system for communicating over a network via an access point, the system comprising:

• a first device connected to a network and in communication with an access point for the network;
• and
• a second device connected to the network and in communication with the first device,
• wherein the second device is a building automation device, wherein a building automation device comprises one or more of:
• a camera, a carbon monoxide detector, a smoke detector, a light bulb, a building automation sensor and a heating, air conditioning and ventilation (HVAC) controller device, and
• wherein the second device is configured to automatically enter and exit a power saving state and, while in the power saving state, not communicate with the first device or the access point;
• and
• wherein:
• the first device is configured to:
• store one or more details of the second device,
• receive periodic state updates from the second device without sending a request for an update to the second device,
• update the one or more details based on the periodic updates,
• receive multicast packets of data on the network to a plurality of devices connected to the network, wherein the plurality of devices comprises the second device, and
• identify multicast packets of data on the network that are directed to the second device.
