Abstract
A method of treating a component adapted for use in a gas turbine engine is described herein. The component may comprise ceramic matrix composite materials. The treatment to the ceramic matrix composite component may reduce or eliminate the wear or damage of crack propagation in the ceramic matrix composite component.
Claims20
A method of treating a component adapted for use in a gas turbine engine, the method comprising
- providing a component comprising ceramic matrix composite materials,
- treating the component to provide a treated ceramic matrix composite component that limits formation of failure inducing cracks in the component during use of the component in the gas turbine engine,
- wherein the treating step include at least one of applying a mechanical load to a surface of the component according to a predetermined force schedule and applying heat to the component according to a predetermined heating schedule.
A component adapted for use in a gas turbine engine, the component comprising
- a body comprising ceramic matrix composite material having a peak-stress region and an off-peak stress region, and
- a strain concentration feature located at the off-peak stress region and configured to cause stresses to form in the off-peak stress region instead of at the peak-stress region to reduce stress at the peak-stress region.
