Abstract
Various control systems for controlling a surgical system according to detected airborne particulate characteristics are disclosed.
Claims17
A control system for a surgical system, the control system comprising:
- an imaging system comprising:
- an emitter configured to emit electromagnetic radiation (EMR);
- a polarizing filter configured to polarize the EMR emitted by the emitter;
- and
- an image sensor;
- and
- a control circuit coupled to the imaging system, the control circuit configured to:
- detect the polarized EMR reflected from an airborne particulate as received by the image sensor;
- determine whether a particulate type of the airborne particulate is a naturally occurring particulate or a synthetic particulate based on a reflective characteristic of the polarized EMR;
- and
- adjust a control parameter of the surgical system according to the determined particulate type.

A control system for a surgical system, the control system comprising:
- an imaging system comprising:
- a multispectral electromagnetic radiation (EMR) source;
- a polarizing filter configured to polarize EMR emitted by the multispectral EMR source;
- and
- an image sensor;
- and
- a control circuit coupled to the imaging system, the control circuit configured to:
- detect the polarized EMR reflected from a particulate in an aerosol as received by the image sensor;
- determine whether a particulate type of the particulate is a naturally occurring particulate or a synthetic particulate based on a reflective characteristic of the polarized EMR;
- determine whether to adjust a first control parameter or a second control parameter according to the determined particulate type;
- and
- adjust the first control parameter or the second control parameter accordingly.

A method for controlling a surgical system, the surgical system comprising an imaging system, the imaging system comprising an emitter configured to emit electromagnetic radiation (EMR), a polarizing filter configured to polarize the EMR emitted by the emitter, and an image sensor, the method comprising:
- detecting the polarized EMR reflected from an airborne particulate as received by the image sensor;
- determining whether a particulate type of the airborne particulate is a naturally occurring particulate or a synthetic particulate based on a reflective characteristic of the polarized EMR;
- and
- adjusting a control parameter of the surgical system according to the determined particulate type.
