Abstract
Systems and methods for forming an oxidation protection system on a composite structure are provided. In various embodiments, an oxidation protection system disposed on a substrate may comprise a boron-silicon-glass layer or a boron layer and a silicon layer. The boron-silicon-glass layer, boron layer, the silicon layer, or a pretreatment layer may include an oxygen reactant compound.
Claims19
A method for forming an oxidation protection system on a composite structure, comprising:
- applying a composite slurry to the composite structure, wherein the composite slurry comprises a boron compound, a silicon compound, a glass compound, an oxygen reactant compound, and a carrier fluid;
- and
- heating the composite structure to a temperature sufficient to form a boron-silicon-glass-oxygen reactant layer on the composite structure.
An oxidation protection system disposed on an outer surface of a substrate, the oxidation protection system, comprising:
- a boron layer disposed over the outer surface, the boron layer comprising a boron compound and a first glass compound;
- and
- a silicon layer disposed on the boron layer, the silicon layer comprising a silicon compound and a second glass compound.
A method for forming an oxidation protection system on a composite structure, comprising:
- applying a pretreatment composition to the composite structure, the pretreatment composition comprising at least one of aluminum oxide or silicon dioxide;
- forming a boron layer over the pretreatment composition;
- and
- forming a silicon layer over the boron layer.
