Abstract
Battery modules for unmanned and human piloted electric aircraft comprise two planar substrates with electrochemical cells secured between to form load-bearing structural components from which fixed-wing aircraft with greater endurance can be constructed. The cells can be oriented perpendicular or parallel to the substrates, and in the latter case the substrates can include slots that the cells fit into. The cells can be secured to the substrates by adhesives, welding, soldering and the like. Battery modules can be formed to the shapes of fixed-wing aircraft parts such as wings.
Claims20
A battery module for use in an electrically powered fixed wing aircraft, said battery module comprising:
- a first planar substrate;
- a second planar substrate disposed essentially parallel to, and spaced apart from, said first planar substrate;
- and
- a plurality of electrochemical cells secured to and between said first and second planar substrates;
- wherein said plurality of secured electrochemical cells comprise a sole mechanical connection and load-bearing support between said first planar substrate and said second planar substrate of said battery module.
A battery module for use in an electric fixed wing aircraft, said module consisting essentially of:
- a first planar substrate;
- a second planar substrate disposed essentially parallel to, and spaced apart from, said first planar substrate;
- a plurality of electrochemical cells secured directly to and between said first and second planar substrates;
- and
- wherein said plurality of secured electrochemical cells comprise the sole load-bearing structure of said battery module.
A battery module for use in an electric fixed wing aircraft, said module comprising:
- a plurality of essentially parallel and spaced apart planar substrates;
- at least two layers of pluralities of electrochemical cells secured to and between one of:
- every first and second adjacent planar substrate of said plurality of planar substrates;
- and
- first and second planar substrates having a third planar substrate parallel to and spaced apart between said first and second planar substrates, wherein said first, second, and third planar substrates have apertures adapted to receive and secure one or more of said electrochemical cells of said at least two layers of pluralities of electrochemical cells;
- wherein each of said planar substrate of said plurality of planar substrates comprise at least one metal layer that provides electrical connections between said electrochemical cells;
- and
- wherein said pluralities of secured electrochemical cells between said plurality of planar substrates comprise a sole load-bearing structure of said battery module.
