Abstract
Nanoparticles formed by emulsion of one or more core polymers, one or more surface altering materials, and one or more low molecular weight emulsifiers have been developed. The particles are made by dissolving the one or more core polymers in an organic solvent, adding the solution of the one or more core polymers to an aqueous solution or suspension of the emulsifier to form an emulsion, and then adding the emulsion to a second solution or suspension of the emulsifier to effect formation of the nanoparticles.

1-29. (canceled)
Nanoparticles having a diameter between 5 nm and 500 nm and having a neutral or essentially neutral surface charge between 10 mV and −10 mV when dispersed in a 10 mM NaCl solution at pH 7,
- wherein the nanoparticles are formed of
- one or more core polymers selected from the group consisting of poly(lactic acid), poly(glycolic acid), and poly(lactide-co-glycolide), and
- polyalkylene glycol molecules or copolymers of the core polymers with polyalkylene glycol molecules, the polyalkylene glycol molecules having a molecular weight between about 1 kDa and 10 kDa,
- wherein the core polymers form the core of the nanoparticles and the polyalkylene glycol molecules are oriented so that the polyalkylene glycol is present on the surface of the nanoparticles
- in a density of 10 or more polyalkylene glycol molecules per 100 nm2 of the surface of the nanoparticles when measured by 1H NMR and
- having a high density brush conformation of PEG coating ([Γ/Γ*]>3).
A pharmaceutical composition comprising the nanoparticles of claim 17 and one or more pharmaceutically acceptable carriers.
