Abstract
This application relates to a portable electronic device. The portable electronic device includes an enclosure having a metal oxide coating, the metal oxide coating including a metal alloy substrate that is doped with a dopant, and a metal oxide layer overlaying and formed from the metal alloy substrate so that the metal oxide layer includes the dopant.

A portable electronic device comprising:
- an enclosure, including:
- a metal alloy substrate that includes a dopant;
- and
- a metal oxide layer overlaying and formed from the metal alloy substrate so that the metal oxide layer includes the dopant.

An enclosure for a portable electronic device, the enclosure comprising:
- a substrate that includes a metal alloy;
- and
- a metal oxide layer overlaying the substrate, wherein the metal oxide layer includes a dopant so that the metal oxide layer is characterized as having a band gap.
An enclosure for a portable electronic device, the enclosure comprising:
- a metal substrate;
- and
- a metal oxide coating overlaying the metal substrate, the metal oxide coating including a first surface portion and a second surface portion adjacent to the first surface portion, wherein the first surface portion includes a first dopant and the second surface portion includes a second dopant different than the first dopant.
