Modified Phenol Polymer and Use Thereof

Abstract

A polymer, such as for use in a petroleum composition, is provided. The polymer has at least the following repeating unit (I): wherein, R1 includes an alkyl, an alkenyl, an alkynyl, an aryl, an amine, or -A-Y—R10 wherein A is a direct bond or an alkylene; Y is —C(O)O—, —OC(O)—, —C(O)N(R11)—, —N(R11)C(O)—, —C(O)—, —N(R11)—, —O—, or —S—; R10 includes an alkyl, an alkenyl, an alkynyl, an aryl, or a polyether; and R11 is H or an alkyl; R2 is an alkylene; X is —O—, —N—, —O—C(O)—, or —N—C(O)—; R3 includes an alkyl, an alkenyl, an alkynyl, or an aryl; R4 includes H, an alkyl, an alkenyl, an alkynyl, or an aryl; and p is 0 when X is —O—, —O—C(O)—, or —N—C(O)— and p is 1 when X is —N—. The present invention also provides a method for forming the aforementioned polymer containing the aforementioned repeating unit (I) as well as a method for using the aforementioned polymer containing the aforementioned repeating unit (I).
