System and method for reshaping and adaptation of high dynamic range video data

Apparatus comprising:

• a memory configured to hold an encoded video data stream, the bit stream including a self-referential metadata structure;
• a video data decoder system including a processor coupled to the memory, the video data decoder system including program instructions that, when executed by the processor cause the decoder system to:
• extract the self-referential metadata structure from the encoded video data stream;
• decode the encoded video data stream to produce decoded video data that does not exhibit high dynamic range (HDR);
• regenerate a video data reshaping transfer function from the extracted metadata structure;
• and
• generate reshaped high dynamic range (HDR) video data as output data by applying decoded video data to the regenerated video data reshaping transfer function.

A non-transitory computer readable medium including program instructions that cause a processor to:

• extract a self-referential metadata structure from an encoded video data stream;
• decode the encoded video data stream to produce decoded video data that does not exhibit high dynamic range (HDR);
• regenerate a video data reshaping transfer function from the extracted metadata structure;
• and
• generate reshaped high dynamic range (HDR) video data as output data by applying decoded video data to the regenerated video data reshaping transfer function.
