Width and frequency conversion with phy layer devices in pci-express

An apparatus comprising:

• physical layer logic to:
• receive a first data block arranged according to a first link width and frequency;
• and
• create at least one second data block arranged according a second link width and frequency, the second link width and frequency different from the first link width and frequency, the at least one second data block including information from the first data block arranged sequentially in the at least one second data block.

A method comprising:

• receiving, at physical layer logic, a data block arranged according to a first link width;
• mapping, by the physical layer logic, bytes from the data block to a second data block, the second data block arranged according to a second link width, the second link width different from the first link width;
• and
• transmitting the second data block across a link, the link supporting the second link width.
