Abstract

Provided is a production method for an insulated electric wire that enables a sealant to permeate between elemental wires with efficiency and high uniformity when a water-stopping treatment is applied to the insulated electric wire using the sealant, and also provided is an insulated electric wire that exhibits an excellent water-stopping performance at a portion between the elemental wires where the water-stopping treatment is applied. The water-stopping treatment is applied to an insulated electric wire 1 containing a conductor 2 containing a plurality of twisted elemental wires made of a conductive material, and an insulation covering 3 covering the outer surface of the conductor 2 by performing: a partial exposure step of adjacently arranging an exposed portion 10 where the insulation covering 3 is removed from the outer surface of the conductor 2, and a covered portion 20 where the insulation covering 3 covers the outer surface of the conductor 2 along the longitudinal axis of the insulated electric wire 1; and a density modification step of increasing a spacing between the elemental wires of the exposed portion 10 while the density of the conductive material per unit length in the exposed portion 10 is increased; and a filling step of filling a gap between the elemental wires of the exposed portion 10 with a sealant 5 made of an insulated material.
