Abstract
Systems and methods for operating an engine with deactivating and non-deactivating valves are presented. In one example, estimates of engine fuel consumption for operating the engine with a plurality of cylinder modes or patterns while a transmission is engaged in different gears are determined and are used as a basis for deactivating engine cylinders.
Claims22
1-7. (canceled)
A method for operating a vehicle driveline, comprising:
- estimating a plurality of engine fuel consumption values for operating an engine coupled to a transmission in a plurality of transmission gears while the transmission is engaged in a gear;
- and
- engaging one of the plurality of transmission gears in response to an expected engine vibration being less than a threshold value and one of the plurality of engine fuel consumption values being an engine fuel consumption decrease relative to engine fuel consumption while the transmission is engaged in the gear.
15-18. (canceled)
A method, comprising
- estimating a plurality of engine fuel consumption values for operating an engine coupled to a transmission in a plurality of transmission gears while the transmission is engaged in one of the plurality of transmission gears;
- engaging a first gear of the plurality of transmission gears in response to an expected engine vibration being less than a threshold value and one of the plurality of engine fuel consumption values being an engine fuel consumption decrease relative to engine fuel consumption while the transmission is engaged in the gear;
- and
- shifting the transmission into a second gear different than the first gear in response to a temperature of a catalyst coupled to the engine exceeding a threshold temperature.

A vehicle system, comprising:
- an engine;
- a transmission coupled to the engine;
- and
- a controller including non-transitory executable instructions that when executed enable the controller to:
- estimate a plurality of engine fuel consumption values for operating an engine coupled to a transmission in a plurality of transmission gears while the transmission is engaged in one of the plurality of transmission gears;
- shift the transmission into an engaged gear of the plurality of transmission gears in response to an expected engine vibration being less than a threshold value and one of the plurality of engine fuel consumption values being an engine fuel consumption decrease relative to engine fuel consumption while the transmission is engaged in the engaged gear;
- and
- shift the transmission into a gear different than the engaged gear in response to a temperature of a catalyst coupled to the engine exceeding a threshold temperature.
