Dynamic data transport between enterprise and business computing systems

A node for use in a data transport system comprising:

• a controller programmed to
• store a protocol agnostic metadata schema (PAMS) that defines a data interface for process variables,
• communicate with a server over a first communication channel using a media independent messaging service (MIMS) layered over a first communication protocol,
• communicate with one more process devices via a native protocol that is independent of the MIMS,
• transfer metadata associated with the data interface to the server, and
• respond to requests from the server for access to process variables that are defined in the data interface.

A host services gateway for use in data transport system comprising:

• a controller programmed to
• establish a communication connection with at least one node,
• receive an identifier for a protocol agnostic metadata schema (PAMS) that defines a data interface for process variables of the at least one node,
• request, responsive to the identifier not matching previously stored identifiers, the at least one node to send metadata corresponding to the data interface, and
• dynamically render a web application programming interface (API) from received metadata and expose the web API to at least one application.
