Communication of congestion information to end devices

A network device comprising:

• a radio communication interface;
• a memory, wherein the memory stores instructions;
• and
• a processor, wherein the processor executes the instructions to:
• receive, via the communication interface from a first end device, first packets that include data indicating that the first packets are subject to a congestion control service;
• determine whether a congestion exists relative to at least one of the first packets;
• estimate, in response to a determination that the congestion exists relative to the at least one of the first packets, a congestion metric value;
• generate, in response to the estimation, a binary value indicating the congestion metric value;
• select, in response to the generation, second packets to carry a congestion message that includes the binary value;
• insert a portion of the congestion message in a differentiated service field of an Internet Protocol header included in each of the second packets;
• and
• transmit, via the communication interface in response to the insertion, the second packets that each include a respective portion of the congestion message, to a second end device.

A non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium storing instructions executable by a processor of a device, which when executed cause the device to:

• receive, from a first end device, first packets that include data indicating that the first packets are subject to a congestion control service;
• determine whether a congestion exists relative to at least one of the first packets;
• estimate, in response to a determination that the congestion exists relative to the at least one of the first packets, a congestion metric value;
• generate, in response to the estimation, a binary value indicating the congestion metric value;
• select, in response to the generation, second packets to carry a congestion message that includes the binary value;
• insert a portion of the congestion message in a differentiated service field of an Internet Protocol header included in each of the second packets;
• and
• transmit, in response to the insertion, the second packets that each include a respective portion of the congestion message, to a second end device.
