Current protection for battery charger

A method for charging a battery, comprising:

• entering a transition state between a first charging state and a second charging state, wherein a current provided to the battery during the first charging state is less than a current provided to the battery during the second charging state;
• and
• during the transition state:
• controlling a transistor to regulate a current to the battery to a first value;
• and
• controlling a power converter to regulate the current to the battery to a second value,
• wherein the first value is less than the second value.

A method for charging a battery, comprising:

• operating a battery charger in a transition state by:
• controlling a transistor to regulate a current to the battery to a first value;
• and
• controlling a power converter to regulate the current to the battery to a second value, wherein the second value is less than the first value;
• and
• operating the battery charger in a battery current regulation state after the transition state by controlling the power converter to regulate the current to the battery to a third value, wherein the third value is greater than the second value.
