Method and apparatus for phone as a key including dynamic wireless band switching

A system comprising:

• a mobile-device processor configured to:
• responsive to an action from a vehicle, requested at a mobile device and responsive to approaching the vehicle, choose a frequency-band from a plurality of detected vehicle-originating frequency-bands, having a known time-of-flight distance-measurement error-margin within an error-tolerance pre-associated with the action;
• connect the mobile device and a vehicle over the frequency-band;
• lower a data-transfer rate associated with the frequency-band;
• and
• subsequent to the lowering, measure mobile-device to vehicle distance via signal time-of-flight, in support of the requested action.

A non-transitory storage medium storing instructions that, when executed by a processor of a mobile-device, cause the processor to perform a method comprising:

• responsive to an action from a vehicle, requested at the mobile device and responsive to approaching the vehicle, choosing a frequency-band from a plurality of detected vehicle-originating frequency-bands, having a known time-of-flight distance-measurement error-margin within an error-tolerance pre-associated with the action;
• connecting the mobile device and the vehicle over the frequency-band;
• lowering a data-transfer rate associated with the frequency-band;
• and
• subsequent to the lowering, measuring mobile-device to vehicle distance via signal time-of-flight, in support of the requested action.
