Abstract
A system for providing power over Ethernet emergency lighting is disclosed. The system includes a rechargeable battery pack that is charged without interfering with data signals present on a power over Ethernet link that provides normal lighting. The system includes a power loss monitor for monitoring the presence of normal lighting power present on a power over Ethernet link without interference.
Claims22
A power over Ethernet (“POE”) emergency lighting system, comprising:
- a first POE input connectable to a first POE port link segment, the first POE input connected to a first POE interface connected to extract DC power from a connected POE port link segment and supply DC power to charge a connected battery;
- a second POE input connectable to a second POE port link segment, the second POE input connected to a second POE interface connected to extract DC power from a connected second POE port link segment and to supply the extracted DC power to a normal lighting LED driver;
- a switch having an output, which, responsive to control signals, alternatively connects its output to the battery or the normal lighting LED driver;
- a power loss monitor capable of detecting a loss of normal operating power,
- wherein, when the system has normal operating power, the switch connects the normal lighting LED driver to the switch output, and when the power loss monitor detects a loss of normal operating power, the switch connects the battery to the switch output.
A POE emergency lighting system comprising:
- a POE input connectable to a POE port link segment, the POE input connected to a POE interface, which extracts DC power from a connected POE port link segment and supplies DC power to a normal lighting lamp driver and an auxiliary DC output;
- a rechargeable battery connected to receive DC power from the auxiliary DC output;
- a power loss monitor connected to detect a loss of normal operating power, and
- a switch having a first input connected to the battery, a second input connected to the normal lighting lamp driver and an output, wherein
- when the system has normal operating power, the switch's output is connected to the normal lighting lamp driver, and when the power loss monitor detects a loss of normal operating power, the switch's output is connected to the battery.
The system of 7, further comprising one or more LED lamps connected to the output of the switch.
A POE emergency lighting system comprising:
- a POE input connectable to a POE port link segment, the POE input connected to a POE interface, which extracts DC power from a connected POE port link, wherein the POE interface includes an integral power bridge connected to supply low level DC power to a connected battery charger, and wherein the POE interface is also connected to supply a relatively higher level of DC power to a normal lighting lamp driver;
- a rechargeable battery connected to receive DC power from the battery charger and to supply DC power to a connected backup lamp driver;
- a controller connected to detect and generate control signals in response to a loss of normal operating power;
- a switch having an output alternatively connectable to the backup lamp driver and the normal lighting lamp driver and an output, wherein
- when the system has normal operating power, the switch's output is connected to the normal lighting lamp driver, and when the controller detects a loss of normal operating power, controller generated control signals cause the switch's output to be connected to backup lamp driver.
A POE lighting system comprising:
- a lamp;
- a rechargeable battery;
- a POE input;
- and
- a POE interface for extracting normal operating power from a POE cable connected to the POE input, wherein
- the system has a normal mode wherein the lamp receives normal operating power from a connected POE cable, and
- the system has an emergency mode, wherein the lamp receives power from the battery.
