Electronic device including light detection device and operation method thereof

An electronic device comprising:

• a display;
• a proximity sensor disposed behind a display area of the display, the proximity sensor configured to emit and receive a light of a specific wavelength band;
• a memory storing instructions;
• and
• a processor configured to execute the instructions to:
• receive a phone call while the display is activated;
• in response to the electronic device being placed within a threshold distance from an object during the phone call, deactivate the display during the phone call;
• and
• while the display is deactivated during the phone call, emit the light of the specific wavelength band through the display area using the proximity sensor and receive the light of the specific wavelength band emitted by the proximity sensor and reflected by the object using the proximity sensor to identify a distance between the electronic device and the object.

An operation method of an electronic device, comprising:

• activating a proximity detection mode in response to deactivating the display during an execution of a call application;
• in response to activating the proximity detection mode, identifying a proximity distance of an object based on outputting the light through the light emitting unit and receiving the light through the light receiving unit;
• and
• if the identified proximity distance is larger than a pre-defined proximity recognition distance, deactivating the proximity detection mode and activating the display.
