Initiating Background Updates Based on User Activity

A method comprising:

• collecting, by a sampling daemon of a mobile device, historical energy usage statistics and storing the historical energy usage statistics to a memory of the mobile device;
• determining, by the mobile device, an energy budget for the mobile device based on the historical energy usage statistics;
• determining, by the mobile device, a distribution to represent the historical energy usage statistics, the distribution having a distribution time period;
• assigning, by the mobile device, for each time period within the distribution time period, a portion of the energy budget based on energy usage representing a particular time period from the historical energy usage statistics;
• and
• managing, by the mobile device, energy use of the mobile device based on an energy budget of a current time period within the distribution.

A system comprising:

• one or more processors;
• and
• a computer-readable medium including one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by the one or more processors, causes:
• collecting, by a sampling daemon of a mobile device, historical energy usage statistics and storing the historical energy usage statistics to a memory of the mobile device;
• determining, by the mobile device, an energy budget for the mobile device based on the historical energy usage statistics;
• determining, by the mobile device, a distribution to represent the historical energy usage statistics, the distribution having a distribution time period;
• assigning, by the mobile device, for each time period within the distribution time period, a portion of the energy budget based on energy usage representing a particular time period from the historical energy usage statistics;
• and
• managing, by the mobile device, energy use of the mobile device based on an energy budget of a current time period within the distribution.

A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes:

• collecting, by a sampling daemon of a mobile device, historical energy usage statistics and storing the historical energy usage statistics to a memory of the mobile device;
• determining, by the mobile device, an energy budget for the mobile device based on the historical energy usage statistics;
• determining, by the mobile device, a distribution to represent the historical energy usage statistics, the distribution having a distribution time period;
• assigning, by the mobile device, for each time period within the distribution time period, a portion of the energy budget based on energy usage representing a particular time period from the historical energy usage statistics;
• and
• managing, by the mobile device, energy use of the mobile device based on an energy budget of a current time period within the distribution.
