Abstract
Laser assisted cataract surgery methods and devices utilize one or more treatment laser beams to create a shaped opening in the anterior lens capsule of the eye when performing a capsulotomy procedure. The visual axis of the eye may be determined, during surgery for example, with a laser beam on which the patient is fixated. The capsulotomy may be centered on the identified visual axis. This enables the use of capsulotomy-centering IOLs centered on or in close proximity to the visual axis. The orientation of a toric IOL may be assessed during or after placement by observing the reflection from the back of the eye of a laser beam on which the patient is fixated.
Claims19
A method for replacing the natural crystalline lens of a patient's eye with an intraocular lens (IOL) and centering the IOL on the visual axis of the patient's eye, the method comprising:
- directing a visible laser beam into the patient's eye and having the patient look directly into the visible laser beam, thereby establishing the visual axis as coincident with the visible laser beam;
- scanning a treatment laser beam along a closed curve centered on the visual axis at the anterior lens capsule of the eye to form an opening in the anterior lens capsule centered on the visual axis;
- removing the natural crystalline lens and cortex through the opening in the anterior lens capsule;
- and
- inserting the IOL into the lens capsule through the opening, centering an IOL optical axis onto the opening in the anterior lens capsule, and securing the IOL to the anterior lens capsule opening with haptics extending from a body of the IOL, at least one of the haptics mounting to an anterior side of the anterior lens capsule and at least one of the haptics mounting to a posterior side of the anterior lens capsule.
An intraocular lens (IOL), comprising:
- a body comprising an optical element;
- one or more features indicating an intended anterior-posterior orientation of the IOL in the eye;
- and
- one or more features indicating an intended nasal-temporal orientation of the IOL in an eye;
- wherein the optical element defines an optical axis that is tilted at an angle of about 5 degrees in an anterior-nasal posterior-temporal direction from an anterior-posterior axis of the IOL.
