Abstract
A therapeutic back support device including a back support portion that automatically and repeatedly moves forward to maintain engagement with a user's back as the user moves forward with respect to a chair seat. The back support portion substantially resists backward motion and provides substantially continuous therapeutic support to the user's spine pending a release signal.

A chair comprising:
- a seat portion;
- a support member;
- a back support portion;
- and
- an active device disposed between said support member and said back support portion, said active device being controlled by a controller, said controller being adapted to detect when a user has moved forward with respect to said support member and operate said active device to move said back support portion forward with respect to said support member.
