Abstract
Efficient fish farming techniques are described, including a land-based saltwater flow-through pool fed by seawater intakes, and efficient water flow and waste removal techniques that promote good fish growing conditions. Features include devices for encouraging laminar flow in the flow-through pool, and efficient waste removal, and multiple seawater intakes from different ocean depths.
Claims19
An aquaculture system comprising:
- an inlet in a headend wall of a flow-through pool for providing a fluid to the pool;
- a dish positioned inside the pool and centered on a center of the inlet for distributing a current from the inlet along the headend wall;
- a pressure filter creating an antechamber at a headend of the pool, wherein the inlet and the headend wall are in the antechamber;
- a frame wall around the inlet extending from the headend wall and along the pool;
- and
- a return fin extending from the frame wall inward toward the inlet inside the antechamber.

An aquaculture pool system, comprising:
- an inlet in a headend wall of a flow-through pool for providing a fluid to the pool from an open body of water;
- a flow-shaping structure for encouraging laminar flow of the fluid from the headend to a tail-end of the pool;
- a first drain proximate to a bottom of the tail-end of the pool for extracting a first portion of the fluid;
- a treatment system connected to the first drain for removing waste from the first portion of the fluid;
- a second drain toward proximate to a middle depth of the tail-end of the pool for extracting a second portion of the fluid;
- and
- an outlet for returning the first treated portion of the fluid and the second, untreated portion of the fluid the open body of water.
4 more elements
An aquaculture method comprising:
- inducing a substantially laminar flow of fluid through a flow-through pool;
- adding feed to the laminar flow in the pool;
- growing an aquatic organism in the laminar flow of the pool;
- controlling movement of waste through the pool with the laminar flow;
- removing waste from the laminar flow.
2 more elements
A water intake system, comprising:
- a first intake positioned in an ocean at a first depth below an ocean surface and at a location coincident with a large-scale ocean current;
- a second intake positioned in the ocean at a second depth below the ocean surface, wherein the second depth is greater than the first depth and at a depth substantially free of an undesirable organism;
- and
- an intake mixer to mix ocean water from the first intake and the second intake and to provide the mixed ocean water to an inlet of an on-land flow-through aquaculture pool.
