Genes expressed in mental illness and mood disorders

A method for treating mental illness comprising:

• obtaining a sample containing nucleic acid transcripts from a subject;
• combining the sample with a composition comprising a plurality of cDNA molecules, wherein the plurality of cDNA molecules consists of two or more cDNA molecules selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs:1-50, wherein one or more of SEQ ID NOs:1-50 may be substituted for by the complement of said cDNA molecule, to form one or more hybridization complexes;
• detecting the one or more hybridization complexes;
• comparing the one or more hybridization complexes detected with those from a subject without a mental illness, wherein differences in the intensity of each hybridization complex indicates differential expression of cDNAs in the sample;
• identifying the subject to have a mental illness based on the differential expression of cDNAs in the sample;
• and
• administering to the subject a treatment for the mental illness.

A method for treating mental illness comprising:

• obtaining a sample containing nucleic acids from a subject;
• combining the sample with an array comprising a plurality of cDNA molecules immobilized on a substrate, wherein the plurality of cDNA molecules consists of two or more cDNA molecules selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs:1-50, wherein one or more of SEQ ID NOs:
• 1-50 may be substituted for by the complement of said cDNA molecule, to form one or more hybridization complexes;
• detecting the one or more hybridization complexes;
• comparing the one or more hybridization complexes detected with those from a subject without a mental illness, wherein differences in the intensity of each hybridization complex indicates differential expression of cDNAs in the sample;
• identifying the subject to have a mental illness based on the differential expression of cDNAs in the sample;
• and
• administering to the subject a treatment for the mental illness.

A method of monitoring treatment for mental illness comprising

• obtaining a sample containing nucleic acids from a subject treated for mental illness;
• combining the sample with a composition comprising a plurality of cDNA molecules, wherein the plurality of cDNA molecules consists of two or more cDNA molecules selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs:1-50, wherein one or more of SEQ ID NOs:1-50 may be substituted for by the complement of said cDNA molecule, to form one or more hybridization complexes;
• detecting the one or more hybridization complexes;
• comparing the one or more hybridization complexes detected with those from a subject without a mental illness, wherein differences in the intensity of each hybridization complex indicates differential expression of cDNAs in the sample;
• and
• altering treatment for the subject treated for mental illness when differential expression of cDNAs in the sample is detected.

A method of monitoring treatment for mental illness comprising

• obtaining a sample containing nucleic acids from a subject treated for mental illness;
• combining the sample with an array comprising a plurality of cDNA molecules immobilized on a substrate, wherein the plurality of cDNA molecules consists of two or more cDNA molecules selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs:1-50, wherein one or more of SEQ ID NOs:
• 1-50 may be substituted for by the complement of said cDNA molecule, to form one or more hybridization complexes;
• detecting the one or more hybridization complexes;
• comparing the one or more hybridization complexes detected with those from a subject without a mental illness, wherein differences in the size and intensity of each hybridization complex indicates differential expression of cDNAs in the sample;
• and
• altering treatment for the subject treated for mental illness when differential expression of cDNAs in the sample is detected.
