Optimizing cloud resources for abr systems

A method comprising:

• storing data in a memory to be used by a processor;
• performing the following steps by the processor:
• allocating initial available bandwidth for adaptive bitrate (ABR) streaming over an ABR streaming network among a set of channels available to be streamed;
• optimizing at least one profile for at least one channel of the set of channels after the initial available bandwidth has been allocated, the optimizing being performed on the basis of a video quality metric, a viewing metric, and at least one of:
• a central processing unit (CPU) constraint;
• and
• a bandwidth constraint;
• and
• repeating the allocating and optimizing upon one of:
• adding at least one channel to the set of channels;
• deleting at least one channel from the set of channels;
• changing available CPU capacity;
• and
• changing available bandwidth.

A system comprising:

• means for storing data in a memory to be used by means for processing;
• means for allocating, by the processor, an initial available bandwidth among a set of channels for adaptive bitrate (ABR) streaming;
• means for by the processor, at least one profile for at least one channel of the set of channels after the initial available bandwidth has been allocated, the optimizing being performed on the basis of a video quality metric, a viewing metric, and at least one of:
• a central processing unit (CPU) constraint;
• and
• a bandwidth constraint;
• and
• means for repeating the allocation and optimization upon one of:
• adding at least one channel to the set of channels;
• deleting at least one channel from the set of channels;
• changing available CPU capacity;
• and
• changing available bandwidth.
