MIMO Precoding Enabling Spatial Multiplexing, Power Allocation and Adaptive Modulation and Coding

An apparatus comprising:

• a memory element configured to store information;
• and
• a processor configured to use at least a portion of the information to:
• form a precoder index, wherein to form the precoder index the processor is configured to quantize a first precoding value from a precoder matrix that corresponds to estimated channel state information for a transmission channel of a MIMO system;
• encode a feedback value into an encoded feedback value to indicate a number of spatial streams to be used during transmission of a data signal transmitted over the transmission channel, wherein the feedback value includes a channel quality indicator value;
• and
• transmit the precoder index and the encoded feedback value via a wireless transmitter over a feedback channel to a device.

A receiver for providing feedback in a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) communication system, the receiver comprising:

• a processor configured to:
• form a precoder index, wherein to form the precoder index the processor is configured to quantize a first precoding value from a precoder matrix that corresponds to estimated channel state information for a transmission channel of a MIMO system;
• and
• encode a feedback value into an encoded feedback value to indicate a number of spatial streams to be used during transmission of a data signal transmitted over the transmission channel, wherein the feedback value includes a channel quality indicator value;
• and
• radio circuitry communicatively coupled to the processor and configured to transmit the precoder index and the encoded feedback value via a feedback channel to a device.
