A magnetic pole assembly (110), providing flux to an air gap (G), comprising one or more magnetic pole pieces (30) and one or more sources of magnetic flux (40, 50, 60), wherein:

• each magnetic pole piece (30) includes a first axial face (32A), a second axial face (32B), a first circumferential face (34A), a second circumferential face (34B), a radially inner surface (36A), and a radially outer surface (36B);
• and wherein
• said one or more sources of magnetic flux (40, 50, 60) lie adjacent each of the first axial face (32A), the second axial face (32B), the first circumferential face (34A), the second circumferential face (34B), and one of the radially inner surface (36A), or the radially outer surface (36B), (thereby to allow flux created by said source of magnetic flux (40, 50, 60) to enter the one or more magnetic pole pieces (30) which then focus the magnetic flux towards and out of the radial surface (36) not having a source of magnetic flux adjacent thereto).
