A wavelength converter comprising a luminescent material and inorganic nanoparticles dispersed in a polysiloxane matrix, the inorganic nanoparticles comprising at least 10 weight percent based on the combined weight of the polysiloxane matrix and the nanoparticles.

A solid state lighting device comprising:

• a semiconductor light source and a wavelength converter,
• the wavelength converter having a luminescent material and inorganic nanoparticles dispersed in a polysiloxane matrix, the inorganic nanoparticles comprising at least 10 weight percent based on the combined weight of the polysiloxane matrix and the nanoparticles, wherein the organic content of the converter is less than 25 weight percent.
