Secondary Retention of Optical Members

A method for providing secondary, fail-safe retention of an optical member about a vehicle, the method comprising;

• obtaining an optical member having a first end and a second end opposite the first end;
• obtaining a mount operable to support the optical member;
• securing the second end of the optical member to the mount using a primary retention system;
• utilizing a secondary retention system of the optical member about the mount, the secondary retention system comprising a retaining dip secured to one of the optical member and the mount, the retaining clip comprising an aperture therethrough;
• and a pin secured to the other of the optical member and the mount;
• and
• facilitating extension of the pin through the aperture, such that the pin is operable to engage the retaining clip upon movement of the optical member relative to the mount and at least partial failure of the primary retention system, the pin and the retaining dip acting together to provide positive retention of the optical member.
