Abstract
The present application relates methods for treating a depressive symptom comprising administering an effective amount of a μ opioid receptor agonist or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof to a subject in need thereof. Non-limiting examples of such agonist include the compounds of Formulas I, II, III, and IV, as well as the compounds of Table A.

A method of treating a depressive symptom in a subject in need thereof, the method comprising administering to the subject an effective amount of a μ opioid receptor agonist, wherein the μ opioid receptor agonist is compound of Formula III:
- or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein
- R1 is C1-C6 alkyl, C2-C6 alkenyl, aryl, cycloalkyl, heterocyclyl, benzyl, hydroxyalkyl, or alkoxyalkyl;
- R1a is H or methyl;
- R2 and R3 are each H, methyl, or ethyl, or alternatively, R2 and R3, together with the carbon atoms to which they are attached, form a 6-membered unsubstituted carbocyclic ring or carbonyl-substituted carbocyclic ring;
- R4 and R5 are each, independently, H, hydroxyl, or C1-C6 alkyl;
- R6 is unsubstituted or substituted C6-C10 aryl, or substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl comprising one or two 5- or 6-membered rings and 1-4 heteroatoms selected from N, O and S;
- and
- R7 and R8 are each, independently, H or hydroxyl.
