Abstract
A system and method for further improving upon an ability of a surgeon to reduce or eliminate impaction forces when installing or assembling a prosthesis. An implant includes a surface treatment for aiding operations with the implant. For example, some surface treatments provide an asymmetry in installation versus removal to bias the associated implant deeper into an installation site.
Claims18
A method for inserting an implant in a hole prepared in a portion of a bone, the hole having an insertion axis defining an insertion path for an insertion of the implant into the hole, the implant including an implant axis, further including an asymmetric stiffness profile producing an increased propensity for insertion responsive to an application of an insertion force aligned with the implant axis, and also including an engagement structure configured to engage a force transfer device, comprising:
- a) coupling the forcer transfer device to the engagement structure wherein the force transfer device is configured to apply the insertion force to the implant through the engagement structure when the insertion force is aligned with or parallel to the implant axis;
- b) orienting the implant using the force transfer device to align generally the implant axis to the insertion axis;
- and
- c) producing an application of the insertion force to the force transfer device when the axes are generally aligned or parallel;
- wherein said application of the insertion force is configured to insert the implant into the hole responsive to the increased propensity for insertion produced by the insertion force applied to the implant through the engagement structure.
An apparatus for an installation of an implant into a hole prepared in a portion of a bone, the implant having a wall defining an opening into a cavity with the wall around the opening defining a rim, comprising:
- a force application device including a first portion coupled to a second portion, said first portion including a rim engagement structure, complementary to the rim, configured to contact the rim at a plurality of locations, said second portion configured to receive an insertion force and to distribute the insertion force to the rim through said rim engagement structure.
A method for inserting an implant in a hole prepared in a portion of a bone, the hole having an insertion axis defining an insertion path for an insertion of the implant into the hole, the implant including an implant axis, the implant having a wall defining an opening into a cavity with the wall around the opening defining a rim wherein the implant axis is centered within the opening, and also including an engagement structure coupled to the rim with the engagement structure configured to engage a force transfer device, comprising:
- a) coupling the forcer transfer device to the engagement structure wherein the force transfer device is configured to apply the insertion force to the implant through the engagement structure when the insertion force is aligned with or parallel to the implant axis;
- b) orienting the implant using the force transfer device to align generally the implant axis to the insertion axis;
- and
- c) producing an application of the insertion force to the force transfer device when the axes are generally aligned or parallel.
