Fluorescent imager with limited variable gain

A method for applying a limited variable gain to a fluorescent image, comprising:

• associating between each of a plurality of distance values and a respective gain values range;
• acquiring, by an optical detector, at least one fluorescent image of a fluorescing sample, wherein said at least one fluorescent image comprises multiple raw pixel values;
• obtaining a gain value;
• determining a distance between said optical detector and said fluorescing sample;
• matching said determined distance to one of said plurality of distance values;
• obtaining said respective gain values range associated with said matched distance value;
• imposing limits of said respective gain values range onto said gain value, thereby determining a limited gain value;
• applying said limited gain value to said multiple raw image pixels, thereby deriving multiple display image pixels;
• and
• storing said multiple display image pixels.

A computer program product comprising a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having program code embodied thereon, the program code executable by at least one hardware processor to:

• obtain a gain value;
• determine a distance between an optical detector and a fluorescing sample;
• match said determined distance to one of a plurality of distance values, each of said plurality of distance values associated with a respective gain values range;
• obtain said respective gain values range associated with said matched distance value;
• impose limits of said respective gain values range onto said gain value, thereby determining a limited gain value;
• apply said limited gain value to multiple raw image pixels of at least one fluorescent image of a fluorescing sample, said fluorescent image detected by said optical detector, thereby deriving multiple display image pixels, said multiple display image pixels forming an image;
• and
• store said multiple display image pixels.
