Vehicle Turn Detection

A method comprising:

• detecting, by a turn detection apparatus using at least one sensor of a vehicle, a triggering vehicle event;
• initiating, by the turn detection apparatus, a sliding heading detection window defined by a specified amount of time;
• detecting, by the turn detection apparatus, a plurality of headings of the vehicle during the sliding heading detection window, each of the headings corresponding to a different point in time;
• determining, by the turn detection apparatus, at least one movement characteristic of the vehicle based on the plurality of headings of the vehicle detected during the sliding heading detection window;
• and
• determining, by the turn detection apparatus, a risk of loss associated with at least one of the vehicle and a driver of the vehicle based on the determined at least one movement characteristic of the vehicle.

A non-transitory computer readable medium storing computer readable instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause a turn detection apparatus to:

• detect, using at least one sensor of a vehicle, a triggering vehicle event;
• initiate a sliding heading detection window defined by a specified amount of time;
• detect a plurality of headings of the vehicle during the sliding heading detection window, each of the headings corresponding to a different point in time;
• determine at least one movement characteristic of the vehicle based on the plurality of headings of the vehicle detected during the sliding heading detection window;
• and
• determine a risk of loss associated with at least one of the vehicle and a driver of the vehicle based on the determined at least one movement characteristic of the vehicle.
