Method and system for virtual server dormancy

An enterprise content management system for providing managed access and connections for client devices to a repository through a network, the enterprise content management system comprising:

• a plurality of content servers, each content server operable in an active mode or a dormant mode;
• an application server comprising an application for providing access to a repository, the application server configured to:
• receive connection requests from client devices;
• request a list of active content servers from a content broker;
• and
• for a connection request from a client device, establish a session with an active content server from the list of active servers;
• and
• the connection broker configured to:
• receive statuses from the content servers indicating whether each content server is the active mode or the dormant mode;
• receive request for the list of active content servers from the application server;
• and
• provide the list of active content servers to the application server.
