Abstract
The present application generally relates to hypergolic hydrocarbon fuel compositions comprising a convenient fuel and a cycloheptatriene and/or its analogs, and methods of making and using the hypergolic hydrocarbon fuel compositions.
Claims10
A hypergolic fuel composition comprising a conventional fuel and a compound of formula (I):
- wherein R1-R8 are each independently H, —NR9R10, —OR11, —NH(C═O)—R12, —O(C═O)—R13, —CN, —NO2, —CF3, —(C═O)R14, —COOR15, halogen, C1-C8 straight or branched alkyl, C1-C8 straight or branched alkenyl, C1-C8 straight or branched alkynyl, or C3-C8 cycloalkyl, and wherein R1 and R2 can form an exocyclic double bond ═X, wherein ═X is ═CR16R17, ═NR18, or ═O;
- and R9-R18 are each independently H, C1-C8 straight or branched alkyl, wherein the hypergolic fuel composition provides an ignition delay of 1 ms-100 ms when the hypergolic fuel composition is treated with an oxidizer.
A method for producing a hypergolic propellant comprising contacting a hypergolic fuel with an oxidizer, wherein said hypergolic fuel comprises a compound of formula (I):
- wherein R1-R8 are each independently H, —NR9R10, —OR11, —NH(C═O)—R12, —O(C═O)—R13, —CN, —NO2, —CF3, —(C═O)R14, —COOR15, halogen, C1-C8 straight or branched alkyl, C1-C8 straight or branched alkenyl, C1-C8 straight or branched alkynyl, or C3-C8 cycloalkyl, and wherein R1 and R2 can form an exocyclic double bond ═X, wherein ═X is ═CR16R17, ═NR18, or ═O;
- and R9-R18 are each independently H, C1-C8 straight or branched alkyl.
