Image forming apparatus

An image forming apparatus, comprising:

• an apparatus main body;
• a cartridge, including a photosensitive member bearing a toner image, that is detachably attached to the apparatus main body;
• a transfer member that transfers a toner image from the photosensitive member onto a recording material, the transfer member being movable between a first position so as to contact the photosensitive member and a second position so as to be farther from the photosensitive member than the first position while the cartridge is attached to the apparatus main body;
• and
• a separation member arranged on the transfer member at an end in an axial direction of the transfer member and separates the photosensitive member and the transfer member, the separation member moving in a first direction when the photosensitive member rotates while the transfer member is at the second position so that the transfer member moves from the second position to the first position by movement of the separation member in the first direction,
• wherein the separation member includes a contact surface contacting the photosensitive member when the transfer member is at the second position and a regulation unit that regulates a position of the separation member with respect to the photosensitive member, and
• wherein the regulation unit contacts the photosensitive member earlier than the contact surface in a process of inserting the cartridge in the apparatus main body.
